Learn a little about Triceratops
The full name of this dinosaur is Triceratops Horridus. It looks very fierce and frightening but was a herbivore. It only ate plants but got eaten itself by Tyrannosaurus Rex. It ranged across western North America in the late Cretaceous period, some 69 million years ago. Despite its fierce appearance, this famous ceratopsian, or horned dinosaur, was an herbivore.
The meaning of Triceratops (Try-SERa-tops) is ‘three-horned face’. The Triceratops had a frill of bone at the back of its skull and 3 horns. The third horn, on the nose, was used for self-defence.
Triceratops were 9 metres (30 feet) in length and weighed 5 tons. The bony frill, sometimes as much as a metre wide, also helped in self-defence. Some of them weighed almost as much as a Tyrannosaurus.
