The Big Battle
The dance shows a fight between the Archangel Michael and a group of devils. In the end, the angel always wins!

Amazing Masks
Dancers wear huge, heavy masks with big eyes, horns, and scary teeth. Some masks are so detailed they have tiny dragons or snakes carved into them.

A Mix of Traditions
The dance is a blend of old native stories from the Andes (like the Uru people) and Catholic beliefs brought by explorers from Spain.

Loud and Proud
The music is very energetic! Big bands play loud brass instruments like trumpets and trombones, while drummers keep a fast beat that makes you want to jump.

Where to See It
It is most famous at the Carnival of Oruro in Bolivia, but it is also danced in Peru and in the north of Chile.
