The first Alebrijes originated with the artist Pedro Linares. In 1936, when he was 30 years old, Linares fell ill with a high fever, which caused vivid dreams. Once he recovered, he began to re-create the creatures he had seen in his dreams, using papier-mâché and cardboard. A gallery owner discovered his work, and this brought him to the attention of Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo, who began commissioning more alebrijes. Read more here...
